MIT Sloan Fall Golf Classic

Boy, is this trophy going to look good on my desk! Our team of 4 marginally decent duffers took the prize within the handicapped competition for the best round on Sunday within the 2006 Fall "Open Container" Open. Big shout-out to my awesome teammates:

Anthony "Sergio" Garcia
Heidi "Birdie Maniac" Zak
Adrian "Comes up" Bignami

First place, definitely better than any of us expected. I want to make sure to save a special thank you for the gnomes that kept catching the balls that I hit into the woods and chucking them back into the fairway -- seriously, we would never have won without your generous "bounces."

Blogger Backrub from Nietzche

There are few things better than seeing your name up in lights on your favorite blog for little more than passing along a funny cartoon. Well, today when my habitual brain took my mouse and clicked onto Robert Lalasz' "Nietzsche or Nitschke?" blog, there it was -- a big 'ole shout-out to Trond. As a Packer fan, there isn't a lot to get excited about these days (except when the Jets lose, right Joel?) so I am forced to take pleasure in the little things.

Go Pack.

I wanted to invite you to participate in a novel experiment by MIT Sloan and Wharton – leveraging the knowledge and experience of community to write a book together, to be published in 2007.

The focus of our new book, tentatively titled We Are Smarter Than Me, is just that: a guide to the landscape of community knowledge and the identification of key principles to harness it. Organized initially around the major business functions and processes, the book will contain case studies of successes and failures, and commentary on the lessons learned. But most importantly, this book will (we hope) be written by hundreds or thousands of people, each listed as an author.

Using wiki technology, the purpose of our experiment is to determine whether a community approach applies to book-writing, and to harness the knowledge of the community to advance the state of management. You - can learn more about how this will work by visiting http://www.WeAreSmarter.com

About Time the Pack Sacked Ahmad

After another abyssmal performance at the cornerback position, the Packers finally cut Ahmad Carroll. This is the best news that could possibly come out of yet another humiliating Monday Night loss for the Packers. This is a player who consistently was flagged for stupid penalties, couldn't cover a hobbled Randy Moss (leading to the infamous moon) and was responsible for more points for opposing offenses than can even be counted.

Good riddance!

Two tickets to Fenway: $25
Four beers at the game: $26
Seeing the Yankees sweep the Red Sox in a 5 game set: Priceless

Torger has been in town visiting this week and we've pretty much seen everything that there is to see in Bean-town. Monday, however, was no doubt the best day. We hit the trifecta by taking a walk from my apartment to Fenway, convincing a scalper to sell us tickets to the Yankees game for $12.50 each (seriously), enjoying the best sweep of the Red Sox in decades and topping it all off with a trip to Red Bones. Try to top that and you'll find that you can't!

Oh no... I didn't know you were part of the Evil Empire... What a shame.

Hazing at Northwestern

BadJocks.com is reporting that the Northwestern girls soccer team has been suspended pending an investigation into hazing. Apparently, pictures turned up with the girls blindfolded, in their underwear and with stuff written on them. They speculate that alcohol was involved.

Now, while I agree that this seems pretty tame as far as "hazing" goes, its interesting that it happened at NU. Mainly because the school has been pretty much above hazing for the most part for the past 10 years or so. I recall some of the other fraternities on campus having their pledges do stuff like defend a candle against a garden hose or drink a gallon of milk, but on the whole there wasn't much hazing to be seen. My fraternity just plain had none. Sure, the pledges were responsible for things like cleaning up after dinner, but nothing remotely demeaning. It made it a pretty nice place to be and eliminated feelings of resent from festering in the house.

I think its because of the generally tame nature of the Evanston campus (You hear that Kellogg? I called your campus tame! And I go to MIT! LOL) that the administration responds with a swift hammer whenever a whiff of hazing arrives. Then again, these could just be the girls from Glenbrook North at it again... When will they learn?

Long Gone Javon

With Javon Walker shipped off to the mountains, its time to take a bit of a look at what we got for him. Considering that he was threatening (cry wolf?) to hold out until the 10th game and then signing away as a free agent next off-season, the only card that the Packers had was in deriving value out of directing who gets Walker. The Bronco's bit and sent us a 2nd round pick, which Thompson immediately turned around and traded several times resulting in the drafting of 5 players:

47th pick -> Daryn Colledge (T/G)
115th pick -> Will Blackmon (CB)
148th pick -> Ingle Martin (QB)
183rd pick -> Johnny Jolly (DT)
185th pick -> Tyrone Culver (S)

Looking at the players selected, I'm going to have to say that the Packers got more for Walker than he could have possibly delivered in 6 games this season. While none of these picks are marquee players, any one of them has the potential to become a solid starter or even a top player at some point in the not-too-distant future.

* Martin will ceratinly be holding a clipboard on the sidelines this season as he's the only 3rd QB on the roster at the moment.
* Blackmon can line up at WR if needed and Vince knows that the Pack could use a beter dime package.
* Johnny Jolly has a funny name, but at least there isn't a mystery apostophe in it -- with this name, he had better be FAT.
* Colledge could step in and be a starter this season.
* Culver seems to have a good reputation, and the Pack could use some talent at the Safety position - never know.

Go Pack! And just for the record, I'm glad we didn't trade Favre :)
